2011/11/28 Sicap and Methics partner for new open-standards Mobile Signature services

Methics, digital business specialists, and Sicap, mobile solutions pioneer, have together closed a deal with a tier-one operator in Europe to deliver Mobile Ink (m.ink) a mobile ID solution designed on open standards. M.ink unites high security and user-friendly access to digital services which require strong authentication and authorisation. It will shortly open up the possibility for millions of subscribers to benefit from mobile signature access to m-banking or corporate applications for example.

Methics and Sicap rapidly gained the confidence of their first customer thanks to the track records of both partners in their respective domains and the principles of interoperability, security and ease of use that they adhere to.

The solution relies on a standalone, vendor independent SIM Client, which allows interoperability with all Service Provider platforms. For operators looking to launch their first mobile signature services, this is an important consideration, since the market for applications is growing quickly and only an open standards solution will ensure that innovative, global-reach signature services are readily available for activation by their subscribers.

The SIM Client is deployed in a supplementary security domain assigned to mobile ID, enhancing the security of the system. M.ink is powered by a modular and flexible engine, with easy integration of third party services into the system. It also features the industry’s best mobile ID testing tools, essential to support deployment and confirm the viability of new mobile signature applications prior to launch. Sicap and Methics have also paid particular attention to the user experience. To avoid subscribers having to search for functions in a menu, all interaction is network triggered.

Jarmo Miettinen, CEO of Methics Inc said that “Mobile authentication is a strategic area for operators to invest in, and they are clearly looking for mature products they can trust. Now sicap and Methics can provide a one-stop-shop for an operator seeking to run a mobile signature business.

“Mobile signature services are a natural evolution to the sicap offer, which spans the value chain, from Device and SIM management, to billing, loyalty and micro-payment processing.” Our partnership with Industry expert Methics opens the door to extended use of mobile devices for authentication purposes and new revenue streams for operators”, concluded Thomas Vontz, Chief Financial Officer at sicap.

2011/07/06 Finnish Operators Offer Nation-Wide Mobile ID Service — Methics’ Kiuru MSSP 4.0 Runs the DNA MSSP Service

Mobile devices are now secure tools for strong authentication and signatures for Finns

All three major Finnish mobile operators — DNA, Elisa and Sonera — have started to offer mobile identification and mobile signature services to their users, based on a jointly implemented mobile signature service mesh. Interoperability is based on open standards, which means a customer of one operator can authenticate to a service in another operator’s network.

“The Mobile signature service allows users to register their identity locally and authenticate globally.”, notes Jarmo Miettinen, founder and CEO of Methics, a wireless PKI software company, whose solution Kiuru MSSP 4.0 was chosen by the leading mobile operator DNA as the basis of their service. “For consumer applications such as banking or insurance, mobile devices beats all other authentication solutions in both security and convenience. For operators, it streamlines managed security services such as secure remote connections for corporate customers.”

Methics and operators together have also developed Laverca, an open source software library that application providers can use to tie their offering to the service.

The background of this new service lies in operators’ work in FiCom (Finnish Federation for Communications and Teleinformatics), which brought together the operators and software vendors like Methics. The work was done under strict Finnish strong authentication legislation. High level of assurance in the basic mobile identity service has allowed operators to offer additional, government identity information from the Finnish Population Register Centre and customer relationship data from the operators’ own sources.

“Thanks to Kiuru MSSP 4.0, DNA’s service implements FiCom’s recommendation 2.0 in its entirety”, points out Lasse Leppanen, development manager from DNA Ltd. “Methics helped us achieve interoperability and implement the service. End users may visit in a point of sales or do self-registration using bank ids”.

2008/10/24 Mobile Authentication at University of Helsinki

Project manager Ville Tenhunen from University of Helsinki presented mobile signature authentication project in the Finnish Universities’ IT-2008 seminar at Helsinki University of Technology.

In a joint research project University of Helsinki and Methics Oy have integrated Mobile Signature Service Provider (MSSP) technology with Shibboleth 2 Identity Provider (IDP) tecnology and connected these to live Finnish Mobile Signature Service (MSS)mesh network.

By linking the university MSSP server to their Shibboleth Identity Management (IDM) system, University of Helsinki and Methics have demonstrated easy and standard based mobile signature integration to Shibboleth. MSS uses OASIS Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) version 2 MobileTwoFactorContract authentication context and Java Authentication and Authorization Service JAAS.

This integration provides new students with secure mobile authentication ability to register to university IT-services. There is no longer need for personal visit to the university student office or filling of paper forms. The other technology development goal was to allow separate IDP systems to share attributes between different IDP technologies. For instance, University of Helsinki students’ electronic certificates of studies, signed by the university, can be distributed in the live MSS network to other universities and Service Providers (SPs). The long term objective is to make a SAML enhancement proposal for ETSI mobile signature standards.

2005/03/14 Finnet and TeliaSonera Finland Performed Successful MSS Roaming

Sonera and Finnet performed roaming with mobile certificates

Sonera and Finnet have performed successful roaming between their mobile signature services. On account of roaming, service providers and mobile subscribers can use their certificate services seamlessly between Finnet’s and Sonera’s mobile networks. The roaming was implemented using Methics Oy’s service platform.

The mobile-certificate roaming is a continuation for the earlier co-operation in which major Finnish operators defined a joint model for a mobile certificate based on the citizen certificate. The mobile certificate is a secure and easy-to-use tool for authentication and digital signatures for both service providers and consumers. It can be used in electronic transactions in connection with public web service, e-commerce and telephone customer service, for example.

“Roaming is a manifestation of the mobile-certificate co-operation conduced within FiCom (Finnish Federation for Communications and Teleinformatics). The compatilibility of services lays a foundation for a large-scale introduction of mobile signature services,” says Development Manager Mika Junttila of TeliaSonera Finland. “Roaming between operators allows customers to use the mobile certificates on their mobile phones irrespective of what mobile-certificate service the service provider uses. The service providers also benefit: they can reach a maximum number of customers by using the service of a single operator.”

“Reliable identification of a person is a prerequisite for the information society. Mobile operators are well positioned to provide identity services. Apart from the mutual co-operation, we work for better availability and better services together with technology and service providers,” says Jarkko Utriainen of Finnet Oy.

“In order to function, the services need to be based on common standards. The roaming solution between Finnet and Sonera is in line with ETSI’s (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) interoperability and roaming standards related to digital signatures. The solution can therefore be expanded from domestic to international roaming,” says CEO Jarmo Miettinen of Methics Oy, which is responsible for the technical implementation. “The roaming now performed is a trailblazing effort even on the global scale. There are similar projects elsewhere as well, but commercial compatibility and interoperability between two operators’ services have not been tested on such a large scale before,” Miettinen continues.
